Only 15 – 20 minutes’ drive from Queenstown, traveling west along the Glenorchy-Queenstown Road is Closeburn. Home to Alpine Retreat, Moke Lake, 7 Mile Point and Wilsons Bay. You’ll also find Bob’s Cove / Mt Crichton, home to 12 Mile Delta and Punatapu/Bob’s Cove.
Tāne Mahuta is the atua/god of the forest, and his presence can be felt in these regions. This is the beginning of true Aotearoa forests. These landscapes feature our indigenous Beech Tree/Tāwhai forests, pristine wild rivers and huge lake vistas.
You’ll love this area if you enjoy connecting to nature, being within close proximity to a variety of short walks, enjoy waking up to bird song in the morning and going to bed under a vast blanket of stars at night – our neighbourhood is only a stones throw from Queenstown but provides a true feeling of isolation.
On a rare occasion, if you are extremely lucky and the conditions are perfect (middle of winter on a crisp clean night) you may even see the Aurora Australis – Southern Lights. Moke Lake is a locals favourite to view the lights.
Stay in beautiful holiday homes, luxury lodges or exclusive boutique hotels or get back to basics and pitch a tent at Twelve Mile Delta or Moke Lake.
When it comes to holiday homes, you’ll find pods suitable for a couple, or beautiful larger homes fit for a bride and her bridal party, or a family, friends or colleagues gathering. Some properties are also sold for exclusive use or welcome guests into various villas and rooms – our neighbourhood has a lot to offer and not many visitors know about it.
Lake Dispute Track | Easy | 1.5 hours return
Zigzag up through shrubland to the high country lake – Lake Dispute.
Extend your walk with the Mt Crichton Loop Track – allow 40 mins. Access is at the southern end of the lake and you’ll find the starting point along Glenorchy-Queenstown Road, approximately 10.5km from Queenstown. Look out for the signposts.
Bob’s Cove Bridle Track | Easy | 1-2 hours
A perfect stroll, only 10 minute’s drive from Queenstown, into native forest and beautiful lakeside vistas. Follow the originally track linking Queenstown and Glenorchy and enjoy the flora and fauna.
Mt Crichton Loop Track | Easy | 2.5 hours
A local’s favourite, this loop follows red beech in the gullies, and as the track ascends, it offers views of Lake Dispute and glimpses of Lake Wakatipu. The well-formed track is instantly beautiful. Enjoy it at your own pace, taking in beautiful rivers, a waterfall, a historic hut and a rock tunnel.
Exploring in this area is all about the great outdoors. There are numerous walking and bike tracks, nature reserves and possibilities to discover the lake whether it’s by kayak or water taxi. Picnic and sunbath in this picturesque location, explore movie locations and so much more.
Here are some tips:
If you are staying in Bob’s Cove the Glen Tui Heights adventure park is great for children and adults alike. You’ll find a double flying fox, climb, balance and strength obstacles and fitness equipment. Pop down to Bob’s Cove lakeside for a dip in the water, this is one of our favourite spots for swimming.
Wilson Bay is a beautiful sheltered lakeside area, sit back and relax, take the kayak, wakeboard or water ski out, connect into the walk/bike track to 7 Mile. This bay is also a photographers dream, the forest, water, vista out to Walter Peak and the wildlife make for a fun day of snapping.
Moke Lake is a locals favourite, especially popular for Queenstown families during New Years. Whilst the town is celebrating in style you’ll find many locals up at Moke Lake getting back to basics. The campsite there is run by the Department of Conservation (DOC). It has 50 unpowered sites by the lake and offers a great place to go fishing, swimming, canoeing, boating, walking and biking.
If you are a Lord of the Rings fan be sure to pop into 12 Mile Delta, where you’ll find the Ithilien Lookout. While you are there explore the walking and bike tracks or try your hand at canyoning, descend and explore by zip line, abseiling waterfalls, slides, plunging into natural pools, floating down narrow passageways and cascading down chutes, all in beautiful natural surroundings.
The night sky in this area is awe-inspiring, there is very little light and noise pollution which making for an ideal location to stargaze and with many outlooks, hills, mountains and vantage points you’re likely to find the perfect viewing platform. You never know, that perfect spot might be in your backyard.

Before leaving Queenstown stop in for your shopping fix, food provisions and any comforts you need at your accommodation as there are no shops or restaurants in this area outside of full service hotels and lodges. Alternatively Check In can make sure your accommodation is fully stocked and ready for your arrival.
Queenstown is only a 15 minute drive out to Bob’s Cove therefore not far to go if you need to top up. Or take a drive out to Glenorchy, only 30 mins drive, to experience what is on offer in this beautiful place.

Glenorchy & Kinloch, a true slice of New Zealand paradise. Sit a spectacular 45-minute drive from Queenstown at the top of Lake Wakatipu.
Surrounded by magnificent snow-capped mountains, pristine lakes, rivers and ancient beech forests. At the edge of Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Park, this town is your gateway to adventure. A must see for nature explorers.
Kinloch is a half hour drive from Glenorchy, part of the road is gravel and can be closed at times so be sure to stop in and chat to the locals to see whether the road is open. Alternatively take the boat over.
GY – to the locals. Glenorchy has a robust community who look out for each other and their town. The fireman are voluntary, an annual community ball is held to fundraise for the school and the Rural Women’s events are not to be missed. If you are travelling during October, be sure to stop in for the annual Flower Show.
Stay at the top of the lake in the camping ground, motels, eco retreats, luxury spa resorts and exclusive lodges. Or settle into your GY home away from home, whether it’s a Eco Pod, quaint cottage or spacious home, there is something for every traveller.
Glenorchy Walkway | Easy | 1 – 2 hour loop
The loop track starts from Glenorchy waterfront and is a great family walk with views of the mountains and a boardwalk through the wetlands.
Lake Sylvan | Easy | 1.5 hours
Enjoy this walk in any weather. Journey through old moraine river terraces and tall red beech, arriving at Lake Sylvan, return via the 1920’s tramline loop. The start of the walk is a 30 minute drive from Glenorchy by car.
Routeburn Track – Day Walk Options | Medium | 1 – 8 hours
The famous Routeburn Track takes between 2-3 days to complete but can be enjoyed as a day walk, from 1 hour return through to an 8 hour full day return experience.
Glacier Burn Track | Advanced | 2 – 4 hours
For views of the Humboldt Mountains, climb through beech forests to Glacier Basin. Travel 25kms from Glenorchy, the track is signposted from Glenorchy-Kinloch Road.
Explore locally, start with a scenic drive along Lake Wakatipu, stop in at Mrs Woolys General Store for a coffee and some local insight. If you like a casual round of golf, head to the camping ground where you green fees are paid to an honesty box and the course is rustic. Take a stroll down to the lake and stop in at the pub for a beer with the locals.
Explore on the water. Get the adrenaline pumping with a jet boat ride along the Dart River, slow down and paddle your way into canyons or boat across to Kinloch for a long lunch.
Explore the land by foot as a solo adventurer or with your guide and revel in the awe-inspiring scenery. Try ziplining and canyoning for something a little more adventurous.
If you are visiting during the New Year celebrations, join in the fun at the Glenorchy Race Day. A raucous Kiwi tradition going back forty years, with lots of trophies to compete for and a great party afterwards.
Eats in Glenorchy can be enjoyed in the cafes, pubs, lodges and restaurants, you could even take something away and find a quite spot lakeside.
Pop in for a pizza at the Glenorchy Café – GYC, enjoy the gastro pub offering at the Glenorchy Hotel or drop by the Sugar Loaf Café and Trading Post Café for a cuppa. The ice cream van outside the Trading Posts Café is also a welcome treat on a summers day.
The Kinloch Lodge offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Head over to relax and enjoy honest food.
Pop back to the pub for a beverage in the evening to enjoy local and visitor company alike.
Being a remote town, there is limited options available, however, plenty to enjoy your visit. From gift stores run by the community, to local artist offerings, activity stores or if you are looking for a bit of beauty therapy pop into see Chrissy who offers a boutique hairdressing studio (bookings are essential). A must for Glenorchy is Mrs Woolly’s General Store, an excellent gift store that also has quality wool wears, leathers, jewellery, gifts, food, books and more.

Flanked by the Remarkables Mountain on one side and Lake Wakatipu on the other, this neighbourhood is pretty special and includes Jacks Point, Hanley’s Farm, Lakeside Estate & Wye Creek. Close to Frankton and the airport, and out of the bustling central Queenstown – you’ll have access to a public bus service if staying in Jacks Point and Hanley’s Farm however you’ll need a vehicle or car service for greater flexibility.
You’ll often find the locals out walking, biking, out for a round of golf or enjoying a long lunch at the Jacks Point Clubhouse – where views of the Remarkables & Coronet Peak can be enjoyed in the sun and accompanied by a local glass of wine.
With the Remarkables on your doorstep – this is a fantastic place to stay if you are looking to spend your days up the mountain. The area is also great for many occasions and there is accommodation to match, the location offers convenient connections into the airport, Queenstown village is only 20 mins around the lake and you’ll have a head start if you are heading to Milford Sounds, Kingston for lunch, visiting a high country farm or further South with the gateway to the south just down the road – otherwise known as the Devil Staircase – take your time on this winding mountain side road, stop off for photo opportunities, there are many and you will not be disappointed.
This area provides an array of holiday home options – from luxury lodgings to family homes, great for bridal parties, corporate groups, someone looking for inspiration in the mountains or if you want to be in close proximity to three of Queenstown’s golf course.
Preserve Loop | Medium | 1.5 hours Loop
Start at the Jack’s Point Clubhouse and follow the Jack’s Point Loop track – enjoy views of the course and further afield but be sure to watch your step and close all gates you open as you’re likely to greet some farm animals along the way.
Lower Wai Creek | Advance | 4 hours
Start at the carpark by the Wye Creek Bridge. This steep track follows the pipeline from the dam and leads you to the foot of a rock bluff, through beech forest and up to the stream in the Lower Wye Creek basin. Suitable for summer only and you must come prepared for sudden weather changes.
Lake Alta Track | Advanced | 1 hour 30 mins
Start on the road behind the Remarkables ski field building, the walk climbs steadily but you will be rewarded with picturesque views.
Explore the neighbourhood – walking, run or bike, there are many tracks and trails for you to enjoy and picturesque scenery to encourage and inspire you to get out in the fresh air.
Head on up the mountain – both winter and summer offers and array of exploration opportunities – skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiles, walking tracks, sightseeing or sit and relax and enjoy the vista.
If you’re an adrenaline junky and fancy a tandem skydiving, why not try it with NZ’s first tandem skydiving company – NZONE – who bunker down in this neighbourhood.
Jacks Point Clubhouse Restaurant is a must visit if you are staying in the area – and even if you are not. The surrounding mountains, the golf course and the beautiful offering in the restaurant is great for a lazy Sunday afternoon or week day escape. It’s a locals favourite – even for those who live on the opposite side of the lake. The restaurant is currently closed for winter 2020 but if you’re planning your summer holiday be sure to include this spot.
This area doesn’t have a lot of dining options – so how about inviting a local chef into your home or Frankton and Queenstown villages are only a short drive away.
This neighbourhood isn’t a shopping mecca but you are never far from retail therapy or other convenience regardless of where you stay in Queenstown. If you are flying in, stop in at Remarkables Park Shopping area for supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacy and just around the corner is Five Mile Shopping Centre.

At the centre of Queenstown is our village and surrounding neighbourhoods – including central, Queenstown Hill, Fernhill & Sunshine Bay and the like. Leaving central and headding to Frankton, home to our airport and our main shopping hub and cross the bridge to access Kelvin Heights along the south side of Frankton Arm – home to Wakatipu Yacht Club and Waka Arm, Queenstown Golf Club and the famous Deer Park Heights – many a movie has been filmed on this peak.
With walks, food and wine, a plethora of exploring options and nightlight on your doorstep, this area is great for visitors who want easy access to service and facility, want to be amongst the hustle and bustle and may not want to hire a car – walking, biking and even boating in or from this area is the way to travel. Whether you are spending a lot of money or very little, you’ll find all sorts of experience here.
Relish in the grandiose vistas or relax in one of our many bars and cafes, set out on a walk or hike, celebrate with friends and family, cruise the lake, hire a bike, read a book in the Village Green or people watch on the lake, buy some local arts and crafts or taste local wines and cheeses – there is so much happening in this neighbourhood, so come stay and explore.
Accommodation options for all budgets and desires can be found in this area, with international hotel chains, alongside B&Bs, luxury lodges and holiday homes. Whether you stay within walking distance of town, or venture a little further out, if you want spectacular vistas try Queenstown Hill or Fernhill for elevated views or Frankton Road for lakeside spectacles and if you love basking in the sun and enjoying views of Queenstown try Kelvin Heights.

Frankton Arm Walkway | Easy | 3.5 hours
This walk is a complete trip of the Frankton Arm inner shoreline. Start at the Queenstown Botanical Gardens, stop off at The Boat Shed café for refreshments and then on to Frankton Beach. If it’s warm then take a dip in the lake before heading for the Kawarau Bridge and continuing on past the Hilton Hotel, view Queenstown from a different vantage point and keep trekking all the way to Queenstown Golf Club.
Queenstown Hill Loop Track | Intermediate | 2 – 3 hours return
Starting from downtown central, stretch your legs on a walk up Queenstown Hill and to the ‘Basket of Dreams’ lookout point or further to the summit.
Ben Lomond Track | Moderate | 6 – 8 hours
Start at the Tiki Trail at the base of the gondola on Brecon Street, ascend through, trees, tussock and shrubs as you approach the Ben Lomond Saddle. Continue on to the Summit – the track will get steep and rugged but you will be rewarded with panoramic views (on a clear day).
Exploring this neighbourhood or further afield is easy when staying here – whether you are setting off on a cruise from downtown Queenstown or exploring further afield most operators depart from this area, making it a convenient hub for everyone – now all you have to do is decide what and where you will spend your time exploring and then connect into your adventure.
After a day of adventure pop down to our floating bar or try one of the roof top bars – on a summers night you’ll be treated to stunning sunsets and a relaxed atmosphere.
If you want to stay local when staying in Frankton, the Frankton Arm of the lake is great for walks, bikes or a run – catch a jetboat or hire a boat for a day of exploration, or stop in and try your hand at being a beekeeper at Buzzstop, while you’re there hire a bike and head east towards to wineries or relax with a massage.
Queenstown has dining options for all visitors no matter what your taste. If you don’t know what you fancy, take a stroll through the village – The Mall at the epicentre offers many options, you might also want to explore the parallel streets on both sides, the lake front or head to Steamer Wharf or Brecon Street for some additional delights.
Frankton boosts several eateries, cafes and restaurants – pop into the Frankton Arms Tavern (or The Fats to the locals) for a beer with the locals and good pub fare or try the Buzzstop for brunch or try your hand at bee keeping.

Galleries, take home international or New Zealand fashion labels or local arts and crafts, grab some last minute outdoor equipment for your hike or camp or send home some wine ready for your return or a few woolly sheep for your friends and family.
Our locally owned grocery stores and convenient stores can be found in the village or a 5 minute walk from the centre of town – peruse the aisle of our favourite deli-style market or pop into a bigger supermarket for all your shopping needs.
Frankton has three shopping areas – Remarkables Park & The Landing, close to their airport and home to restaurants, cafes, supermarket, bakeries, Asian food mart and so much more; Five Mile is on the north side of the airport and sits along side Queenstown Central – you’ll find supermarkets, eateries, electronics and so much in this area – Queenstown’s shopping hub.

Only 15 minutes’ drive from the airport, Arrowtown has all the amenities of Queenstown at half the pace. Our tiny one-street town offers a refined selection of excellent restaurants, bars and gift stores. The golf courses are internationally recognised, the bike and walk tracks are plentiful and you’re a small drop away from Gibbston Valley wine country. Take the bus into the hustle bustle of Queenstown and return home to relax in peace but if you’re in town on Wednesday night be sure to venture out and rub shoulders with the locals at the Blue Door open mic night.

Most experiences are available for departure from Arrowtown, however there is also plenty to explore in our backyard – take a stroll along the river, try your luck at some gold panning, hire a bike and venture out, tee off at one of our golf courses or relax with a good book and a glass of pinot noir. If you’ve stayed before, be sure to come back during another season, we’re all about the outdoors during the summer, we light up in an array of orange, gold, red and yellow hues in the Autumn, we’re a great starting point for the mountains in the winter and fresh and energised during the spring.
For a small town we certainly have a lot to offer from family options, to local burgers (Slowcuts), to rustic wholesome cafe eating (Provisions Cafe), to evening tapas and cocktails (La Rumbla), or extravagant fusion (FanTan) and we also have several take-out options too. Take a stroll down the main street and see what takes your fancy.
Shopping in Arrowtown is a leisurely affair, collect supplies from the local general stores (4-Square or Night and Day), fuel up at the self-service (card only) petrol pump, select a little something for you and a loved one in our gift shops, peruse the fashion stores and take home wools and leathers. Whilst wine country is on our door step, we have two great bottle stores – wine, wine, wine and the river-side store has the best ginger beer in town.

Gibbston, is home to our world class Central Otago Pinot Noir but don’t stop there, you’ll also find chardonnay, pinot gris, riesling and sauvignon blanc as well as craft beers and cuisine to match.
The picturesque Gibbston Valley and Kawarau Gorge endures cold winters, hot dry summer days and cool summer nights. The vineyards and rugged mountain backdrop makes for a spectacular journey through the valley and of course the Kawarau River that runs through it – raging in part and meandering in others, offers a refreshing and colourful walk in the area.
This area is a beautiful spot to relax, stay amongst the vineyards or celebrate and gives you easy access to surrounding towns also – Cromwell to the east, Queenstown to the west and Wanaka – via the Crown Range to the North.
If you’re looking to explore the wineries over a few days or just want to soak up the Gibbston Valley sunshine, you’ll find an array of accommodation options – some that are located onsite at the vineyard.

Start at the Kawarau Suspension Bridge and walk to Peregrine Wines. Take your time, take in the view.

Continue on from the Gibbston River Trail or start from Peregrine Wines.
Highway Trail | Easy | 1 hr 20 mins
Start from Peregrine Wines to Gibbston Back Road – stop off at all the wineries along the way or connect to the above walks for a longer day in the sun.
Being wine country there is ample opportunities to sample the offerings – enjoy wine, cheese and beer tasting and stay a little longer for some lunch or a food and wine pairing. There are many ways to explore the vineyards, walk, bike, self-guide or spend the day with the local experts – enjoy a private tour with local wine hero Lance at Queenstown Wine Trail or jump on the Wine Hopper for more flexibility. Lewis at Queenstown Beer Tours will share and connect you with an array of breweries or go by bike (or e-bike) with Around the Basin (add link). Don’t forget to take home a few bottles for loved ones to try.
If you love art trails, you’re in for a discovery journey, whilst tasting wine take up the opportunity to visit the local galleries. Cox’s Vineyard is also home to Found – a collection of modern and traditional art and antiques showcased heritage gallery and tasting room.
Gibbston Valley is home to the Gibbston Valley annual concert – if you are in town at the height of summer you could be rubbing shoulders with classic musicians and enjoying a wine and a dance with the locals.
Gibbston is also home to New Zealand’s first bungy jump – AJ Hackett have fuelling the adrenaline junkies and giving others the courage to bungy off the 43m Kawarau Bridge for over 30 years, if you can bring yourself to jump off the bridge try the Zipride or if you want the ultimate heights experience try Nevis Bungy at 134m or be propelled 150m across the Nevis Valley on the Nevis Catapult.
You’ll find food offerings in most wineries, expect anything from platters to pizza or 3 course meals. – maybe something a little unassuming and where you’ll rub shoulders with the locals try the Gibbston Tavern.
Take home wine, beer, cheese, some local art or gift for loved ones – most wineries have food offerings, gift shops an galleries.
We are limited on convenient stores in Gibbston, you’ll find smaller stores to get a few things but you may need to plan ahead – although Arrowtown village or Frankton where you’ll find all the major supermarkets and other shopping options is only between 15 – 20 minutes away.

Arthurs Point is nestled into the valley and wrapped by the Shotover River. It’s home to the famous Shotover Jet and the Edith Cavell Bridge, an iconic one way bridge that straddles the Shotover River gauge. The close proximity to Queenstown and Arrowtown makes it a great spot for families and groups.
Arthurs Point is made up of Old Arthurs Point on the west side of the Shotover River and the newer development on the east side. There is additional housing developments happening in Arthurs Point village which will make for a bustling atmosphere during the winter, due to its very close proximity to Coronet Peak which also offers a gateway to Skippers Canyon. Take a spectacular scenic and historical journey down into the canyon.
Location wise, this is a great neighbourhood if you want easy access to Queenstown, Arrowtown and the Frankton hub. You’ll also receive access to Coronet Peak and an easy drive connecting you with the Crown Range and Cardrona. We suggest leaving your car at your accommodation and jumping on the bus to Queenstown. Whilst Arrowtown is a quick 15 minute drive away if you get on the bus you’ll be taking the scenic route through Queenstown, Frankton and Lake Hayes as well.
On the outskirts of Arthurs Point is Dalefield and Speargrass Flat. These are premium suburbs with high sunshine hours and rural serenity. Located in the Wakatipu Basin, home to farm lands and surrounded by mountains, this area offers a country like experience but with very close access to all the main centres of Queenstown. We’d suggest hiring a car and being a little more prepared if staying in these areas as there are limited amenities and no public transport links, which is actually a huge part of its appeal.
Arthurs Point is home to accommodations for all budgets, from holiday parks, hotels, lodges, holiday homes and home hosted stays.
It’s a great location for families and groups and although it is not in central Queenstown it is beautifully located amongst the Shotover River and its access to both Queenstown, Arrowtown and Frankton makes it a convenient place to stay also.
Oxenbridge Tunnel Track | Easy | 20 mins return
Start at the Edith Cavell Bridge and take a short walk to a viewpoint overlooking the Oxenbridge Tunnel.
Morningstar Track | Easy | 15 mins one-way
Morningstar Beach is a short walk from the Canyon Food and Brew car park, down to the Shotover River. Start at the DOC carpark.
Mt Dewar | Moderate | 1 hr one way
For beautiful views of Coronet Peak and the Wakatipu Basin, walk this moderately steep walk along a 4WD track and tussock grassland to the top of Mt Dears. Extend your walk along the Devils Creek (4-5 hrs) or Atley Tracks (4-5 hrs)
There is plenty to see and do in Arthurs Point, pop down to the local park with your children or venture out and explore the Shotover River, head up the Coronet Peak road for spectacular views across the Wakatipu basin and beyond, set out on a short stroll, longer walk or a decent hike, jump on your mountain bike or sit back and relax before hitting Queenstown for a night out.
Whether you enjoy the big outdoors – hiking, biking & exploring, are looking for relaxation – hot tubs and spa treatments, in need of a wet weather family activity – tin pin bowling, pool and an arcade games parlour or are adrenaline and adventure mad – paragliding, jet boat rides, 4WD tours and mountain biking trails, there is something for everyone in this neighbourhood.
Coronet Peak also offers summer experiences now. Enjoy the Gondola, a guided walk or explore at leisure on foot, maybe even by bike and stop into the café for some refreshments.
One of our favourite places in our backyard is Skippers Canyon – the view from the saddle is spectacular but heading down into Skippers Canyon is a must do! The Skippers Canyon road clings to the side of Skippers Canyon, which drops vertically to the Shotover River, once known as “the richest river in the world”. Join a local tour company and venture in with them, you’ll learn more about the area, the historical importance and your professional driver can navigate the roads to ensure you arrive and return safely… we’d say you can sit back and relax in the passenger seat but the drive into the canyon can be a thrill in itself. Note: rental vehicles are not permitted on the canyon road.
We have a handful of restaurants in the area. Canyon Brewing is great for an afternoon-into evening relaxed experience, they brew their own beer and the outdoor dining area offers views of the Edith Cavell Bridge, Shotover River and you’ll also see the Shotover Jet whizzing past. Rakau is a pop up eatery that offers great coffee and delicious woodfired pizza, eat onsite or takeaway. Two of the hotels also have food offerings. Kanuka Kitchen has a beautiful outlook to the rugged mountains and winding river or grab some takeaways from Strikebowl.
You’ll also find a beautiful historical cottage, home to a number of different restaurants over the years but now home to local brewer’s – Cargo Brewery and garden bar – enjoy a summer pint in the company of locals and visitors.
We’re limited on shopping here in the Arthurs Point village. There is a small convenience store where you can buy basics such as milk, break and ice cream but come prepared by stopping in to any of the Frankton shopping centres or in Queenstown beforehand.
